Ypulse Essentials: Tween Vote Driving 'Idol' Eliminations?, WeeMes Get Portable, Government To Regulate Teen Bootcamps

Note from Anastasia: This is a short edition as I really do need to pack...

Nick LacheyNick Lachey returns to TV (will host the "High School Musical" reality show) (Entertainment Weekly)

- The CW scores a ratings victory (with the return of "Gossip Girl," but was it big enough to stop the streaming?) (MediaLife Magazine Younger Viewers ratings roundup)

- Tweens driving 'Idol' eliminations (theorizes this grumpy HuffPo blogger. Plus Reality Blurred reports that Carly thinks it was her singing "Jesus Christ Superstar" that upset Christians and sealed her fate)

- WeeMes get portable (letting its avatars travel with an open API. Plus there's now a "Blue Book" guide to virtual worlds!) (Mashable) (Association of Virtual Worlds via Izzy Neis)

- Congress may regulate teen 'boot camps' (good.) (AP)

- Group asks BK to pull 'Iron Man' toys (from kids' meals since the movie is rated PG-13) (MediaPost, reg. required)

- CNET on the MacArthur Forum (more coverage of Wednesday's event from Ypulse 2008 Mashup moderator Stefanie Olsen)

P.S. I want to apologize to newsletter readers for the grammatical errors in my post about teens and writing yesterday -- it's no excuse but rushing and not having an editor to backread my posts means sometimes they turn out that way. Funny that I sounded incoherent while writing about writing though. Also, you can find the report online here. I will be running an interview with the report's author Amanda Lenhart next week. Here's another take from Inside Higher Ed.

Istanbul Was Constantinople. Now it's Istanbul...

I'm heading off to Istanbul this evening (for the first time!) to speak at a marketing conference on Wednesday. I may post here and there, but I'm mostly leaving Ypulse in the very capable hands of Ypulse's new assistant editor Casey and Ypulse Books editor Alli. I will also be Twittering sporadically. I'll return to San Francisco on May 4th...

Ypulse Book Essentials: Eloise, Jenna Bush Publishes Second Book, BEA

Eloise .jpgEloise in Paris (Going to the big screen, from Handmade Films and starring Uma Thurman as the nanny. For what it's worth, I always thought Eloise was such a sad character.) (Associated Press)

- HackerTeen (new graphic novel from computer publishers O'Reilly Media aimed at entertaining teens while teaching them about Internet security and hacker ethics. Check out the HackerTeen site as well) (AppScout)

- Jenna Bush's second book is out! (Read All About It! encourages the love of reading.) (MSNBC)

- Book Expo America (BEA) (Sneak peek: A lot of stuff for librarians! Plus Anastasia will be speaking on the BEA panel "The Gen Z Reader: Understanding the New Reader of the Post-Electronic Age" May 31st!) (Library Journal)

- Latino Books Month kicks off (focusing attention on literacy in both English and Spanish. Cool.) (Hispanic PR Newswire)

- 'Age-ranging gets the thumbs up' (Not a huge fan of leveling, but after some controversy, children's books will display reading level guidelines on their covers in the UK.) (Bookseller)

- Little Brown seeking PSAs (from socially conscious teens to promote James Patterson's environmentally themed "Maximum Ride" series. The campaign is also partnered with DoSomething and includes help from Fallout Boy) (PROMO)

- You already know I feel about Walter Dean Myers (Love him. Check him out in USA Today.)

- The Lolita Effect (new book out from a professor exploring "the profit motives behind the sexualization of tween girls")

- The 'food chain'...in pictures (It's not very YA, but I'd add The Tawny Scrawny Elephant.) (Seven Impossible Things Before Breakfast)
